I explain how to do all these things in this book in more detail, but I'm going to go over the basics here so that you get a feel for how it all works. 1. Open Photoshop. To open Photoshop, choose File⇒Open. At the top left, on the new document that opens, you see the New Document icon (refer to Figure 1-1). 2. Choose File and click on the button next to New. The Open dialog box appears, as shown in Figure 1-2. The dialog box provides three New options: Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, and Photoshop CS (Photoshop has five or six other functions, such as Web and GPS, but I discuss these in Chapter 9). Photoshop CS and Photoshop Elements are the Mac and Windows versions of Photoshop. They provide the same functions, and Photoshop CC (the Creative Cloud version) is basically just a more advanced version of Photoshop. Photoshop CS is at version 10, and Photoshop Elements is at version 12. You may also be able to purchase a subscription that includes the latest version of Photoshop and a few other applications. After you open Photoshop, you see the Welcome to Photoshop screen (see the next section). In her testimony, Tara Copp, the director of the New York State Employment Development Department, told the Rules Committee the department can’t find temporary appointments in New York. In January, the department was able to provide 3,000 jobs, but by February, that number dropped to 612. As of March, it’s down to one hundred. In his testimony, Steve Alvarez of the New York State AFL-CIO told the small business committee, “We are not finding nearly enough available jobs for our members.” Alvarez referenced a recent survey of New York state’s unemployment offices where a “significant” number of employees could not work because they had applied for a job. He blamed the agency that oversees the temporary appointments, the New York State Department of Labor. Thursday, the Rules Committee is expected to hear from the House Small Business Committee on legislation from Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) to extend the temporary appointments program. Connolly says it will save about $2.9 billion over the next decade. Connolly’s bill allows temporary appointments made during the shutdown to be continued through September. The House rules committee is expected to pass a broader bill with two other Democrat-led panels. In December the group canceled its plans for a state-of-the-art stadium as controversy swirled around the new development. Now the group is at it again, with a promise to cancel plans for a $35.3 million stadium. “Yes, the plans for a new stadium will be scrapped. This was not a promise,” said Nyaradzo Zeleza, African National Congress (ANC) Yengeni youth leader. “Don’t come and tell us (ANC) will build a stadium for the people.” He said they would instead look at other options to provide for the youth and they would still have the desire to build the stadium. He said that some of the construction funds from the project could be channeled into other projects that will benefit the youth. “We will start a new (ANC) movement from scratch. This time, the youth will initiate the process. We are going to look at other options to provide for the youth. The stadium is not the most sensible option,” he said. The statement was made in response to questions by reporters and ANC Youth League supporters. Many of the concerns were brought up during ANC Youth League meeting in Thokoza last weekend. The league, which is looking to pull support from the governing party, has warned against actions that contradict the ANC youth league. Last weekend ANC youth league supporters were seen tearing down the venue where the conference was being held. “I see that a lot of people are being demonised. This is just the beginning,” said Zeleza, who has been campaigning against the stadium. “There are a lot of people who support us, but they have not been heard. People who opposed the stadium are the real heroes. We should all support them. They are our role models.” ANC spokesman Zizi Kodwa said he agreed with the statement that the stadium would not be built but said that the ANC did not share Zeleza’s views on the youth league. “The ANC will build the stadium. It is not subject to the discussions of the youth league. The ANC Youth League will not be involved in any process,” Kodwa said.
